Dark Truth About Your Art Style
There may be a disconnect between the art style that you want and the style that comes out naturally. Your creative voice is born out of the process that you enjoy the most, not the finished art you like looking at.
As an example, I wish I was a painter, if I could choose someone's body of work that I wish I could make it would be Angelarium by Peter Mohbacher. It has all the surreal elements that I love but it’s beautifully painted and I have tried to make this type of art but I just don't enjoy the process that produces this type of art. Which means that this isn't for me.
I have to put aside my expectations and be honest about what I actually enjoy making.
You may end up being in a place where you love the process of making the work that you make but not feeling that it is special. It might seem so easy and natural to you that you undervalue what it is that you are creating.
But you have to think of it this way, think about your favorite friends, do you love them because they are their natural selves or because they put up an act? I think in almost all cases it is because you like them for who they are naturally and you have to love your own work the same way.
It doesnt have to be difficult to create to have value. Your easiest pieces can often be the ones that connect the deepest with people.
So as you explore your art style make sure that your expectations of the work dont cause you to stray away from what you actually enjoy. Your natural voice will come through if you create a lot and dont put too much pressure on the end result.
Always remember that its about loving the process, in the end we are all just making sandcastles and eventually it will wash away. The present moment is where happiness will be found.
