Beginner Art Lesson: Mounty
Here is a beginner drawing lesson specifically made for new creatives! We will learn how to draw these cute cartoon characters that are super fun to draw so grab your pencils and the free printable PDF worksheet below
In this beginner drawing lesson we will learn how to draw these super cute and easy mountain characters that are perfect for beginner artists! We will learn step by step through the worksheets and I explain each stage of the process in the video tutorial.
Your ability to draw cute characters in pencil will become much easier as we practice this together!
Body
A) Triangle Shape
We will start drawing our mounty character with a triangular shape that will the largest shape of the body. Feel free to round the edges and play with the proportions of this triangle, dont worry about making it perfect.
In the example image you can see how some of the shapes barley look like triangles!
B) Side Triangle
Add a smaller triangle to one side of the larger triangle, this will make our cute little character look 3D. This can be quite tricky to learn so make sure to practice it lots.
If you have never drawn 3D forms before I would recommend trying my tutorial on 3D forms here after you complete this one!
C) Face
Draw two dots and a line for the face of our character. If you know how to draw different facial expressions you can play around with that. But a simple smile will suffice.
Limbs
D) Legs
Draw small legs at the bottom of our triangle shape, they look like popsicle sticks or sausages. Feel free to make them as long, short, thin or thick as you would like. This is a great place for beginner artists to play with proportions to see how it impacts the character design.
E) Arms
Draw in the arms using similar sausage shapes but make them more bendy. In this step you will draw one of the arms on the side triangle of the body, take note of how some of the lines overlap. You can see in the diagram where I point that out.
F) Details
Erase away some of the overlapping lines, make sure that the arm on the side of the body flows overtop of other lines. We can also add small hatching lines to give the drawing a bit more detail.
Trees
X) Basic Shapes
To draw the trees we will be using two or three triangles and a rectangle. It can be helpful to break down complex subject matter into very simple shapes, this will be a useful skill in your drawing journey
Y) Combine
Stack the shapes together to create our tree shape and erase away some of the lines. Play with the proportions of your trees and see what you can come up with!
Z) Layer
Layer the trees together to make them look like a forest!
Now draw these trees onto our characters, this can be a bit challenging at first but with practice it will become easier!
