Draw Everyday with Ease
If you struggle to draw regularly it's likely that you coming up against your internal expectations
In my 14 years of drawing I usually hesitate to sit down and draw if I am more focused on the outcome of drawing than the process. So if you are trying to draw regularly lets lower the bar
7 Day Challenge!
For the next 7 days, draw a little bit on a post it note everyday. Do this while you have your coffee or before dinner. And assume that you will throw the drawing out
This way no one will see it, it won't take a long time to do and tomorrow you will have a new shot at it even if its horrible
See how much this changes your experience of drawing. The biggest mistake beginners make and I also made, is assuming that the art is about the end results. Let's return to the creative process and actually have fun with it
I know this strategy works because I did this with reading. I forced myself to read 2-3 sentences everyday and celebrated that small win. Within 6 months I went from not wanting to read at all to reading for hours a week
It's tempting to assume we need to make grandiose moves and changes to make progress. But the real hack is starting very small and building momentum. Even if you only ever draw on post notes for the rest of your life, but you enjoy every second of it, would that be so bad?
Once you’ve tried it for 7 or maybe 14 days, see how you feel. Try to find a balance between developing discipline and also giving yourself breathing room. You dont have to draw everyday to make progress
Most professional artists don't draw everyday because it would zap them of their creative energy. Try the challenge for a short period of time as a challenge and see how you feel. The challenge can help you develop a new relationship with your creative side
I think for most of us we had a healthy relationship with these playful and creative sides of ourselves as children. But then in our teen or adult years we tend to attach too much ego and external desires to really enjoy the moment
You can treat drawing as a meditation practice because that’s kind of what it is. As you do your 7 days of drawing try to focus on the actual physical sensation of drawing. Anytime I struggle to get into the flow of drawing I like to focus intensely on the tip of the pen or pencil. This can quickly wash away any thoughts and suddenly I'm dancing with the muse once again
The flow experience is available to anyone who is willing to take the leap and give it a try. So try it and let me know if that helps!
