How to Draw Strands of Hair

How to Draw Hair: Art Tutorials by JeyRam #art #drawing #tutorial

Welcome to this tutorial, make sure to grab the worksheet above to help you practice. Drawing strands of hair isn’t necessarily complicated to understand but it takes a lot of practice to get comfortable with it.

There are two key components to drawing strands of hair, the first is that you have to draw them with volume. To capture the volume of hair, make sure to think of the hair in 3D chunks that have mass. Its tempting to draw hair too thin because we think of it as very light but they have volume.

The second thing you need to practice is drawing a variety of curves. A lot of beginners fall into the trap of drawing the exact same size curves all the way down the strand of hair, which doesn’t feel natural because most hair will have more variation than that. The exception to this rule is hair that is curls that have uniform size, but even then you want the ends to have a little variation.

Take time to draw some strands of hair in your sketchbook, use reference photos of real people and also look at how some of your favorite artists draw hair.
