Step 1. Head shape

Step 2. Roots

  • Draw in the region where the roots of the hair are (which I like to call the baldcap region).

  • Then add the centerline of the hair where the split between the two pigtails begin.

  • Decide the location of the hair ties and draw volumes of hair moving towards the hair ties.

Step 3. Tails

  • Draw in the hair ties if you want them to be visible

  • Add the large forms of the two tails, this step can be a little tricky when you are first getting into drawing hair.

  • Make sure to give the hair a bit of weight by letting the hairs fall downwards after the point of tension. Notice how the hair first moves out and up close to the hair tie and then falls, the tension of the tie is providing the hair support.

  • I recommend practicing this step many times over because it takes a bit of getting used to! Dont be shy about erasing~

Step 4. Details

  • Add loose strands of hair and more detailed linework onto the foundation we have already built.

  • Make sure to add extra linework towards the roots because its an area where we will usually see more details.

  • Pay attention to how hair usually has thicker strands towards the base and tapers off.

Step 5. Render

  • Add shading lines onto the hair, feel free to add as much or as little rendering as you would like!

  • Draw the lines in the direction that the hair strands are flowing, so the lines over the top of the head will move from the front towards the back of the head (where the hair tie is)

Step 6. Practice!

  • Yay we have completed one drawing, now make sure to go over the steps multiple times to solidify your learning.
