Warping Forms

To add versatility to the basic forms we can warp and stretch them to make them more interesting. Learning how to do this helps us better understand how to draw more specific forms instead of being limited by the 3 major forms.

Start by taking a sphere and stretching it out, draw the contour lines to describe the surface of the form. Contour lines helps us visualize the illusion of 3 Dimensions on the page. Repeat this process for the cylinder.

This is a difficult concept to get a grasp on as a beginner artist but as you practice more you will find it more natural and easy. This is a step by step learning process so take it slowly and let your brain digest what you learn.

Overlap

As you get into more complex forms you will have to pay attention to which part is closest to the viewer because we need to know which parts overlap. The portion that is the closest will overlap the ones that are further back, like we see in the example.

Once you complete the worksheets I would recommend you practice these steps in your sketchbook until you feel comfortable. Remember that learning how to draw isn’t easy but it is so fun and it’s worth the effort. You will feel happy that you challenged yourself by practicing new concepts.
