How to Draw Short Hair
Start by drawing the shape of the head, I wont be going over the detailed steps of this here but I have a step by step video tutorial with a free worksheet that you can check out here.
Block in the basic volume of the hair, this is a guideline so draw it in lightly
Keep in mind the direction the hair will be flowing, this will inform how we will fill in the strands of hair.
Draw in the strands of hair, starting with the largest volume and building out the hair. Make sure to draw a variety of curves and sizes of strands to give a natural feel.
When drawing in the lines of the hair, start with the major form that will usually be located towards the front and center of the hair, this depends on the hairstyle but in the example you can see how I have started with the most prominent shapes.
Following the direction of the flow of hair, start adding in more strands of hair around the major form. I like to think of these strands as the supporting strands because I will draw them smaller to help create a natural hierarchy of shapes.
Add more hair towards the back, keep in mind the volume of the strands and direction the hair is flowing. You can see how I have some strands coming down in front of the ear while some go behind. These minor details of each hairstyle can really bring the drawing to life.
Fill in the rest of the hair.
