Make Ugly Art
You can learn a tremendous amount about yourself by actively trying to make ugly art. The secret behind any creative craft is that it's an extension of your lived experience.
This means that the lessons you learn in your art can often be lessons you apply in all other aspects of your life. It's common for creatives to aspire towards beauty, we want to make beautiful things. Choosing to make ugly art can help us grapple with this expectation.
In a world where we can share so much of our lives it can become tempting to set high expectations for ourselves. We compare ourselves to the artists we see online and set higher and higher expectations for what the work should look like.
The problem with high expectations is that it can rob us of the joy of the creative process.
Lowering our expectations and creating ugly art can make us enjoy the process more and remind us of why this is so fun.
So if you are a beginner artist I highly recommend that you spend some time making ugly art. Lower your expectations and actively try to make a bad piece, see what happens!
